Clint Black headlines Olathe Corn Fest
By Kati O’HareDaily Press Writer
OLATHE — For several years, the Olathe Corn Festival department has tried to get Country Music star Clint Black on the stage — now, in 2009 that time is here.
Olathe Mayor Don Perkins announced Monday that Black will headline the 2009 festival on Aug. 1. A contract is underway.
“We’ve been trying to get him for the past four years,” said Bobbi Sale with the festival department. “He’s very popular and he said yes to us this year.”
The credit goes to the festival’s “stellar” booking agent, Fran Romeo, who was the country music talent buyer of the year in 2008, Sale said.
And though there was a large desire to have Black in Olathe, the department didn’t have to go over budget to get him.
The 2009 budget sets entertainment expenditures at $87,000, which includes all the music, agent expenses and hospitality, Sale said. Black will cost the fund about $70,000 to $75,000 — about what the festival paid for Travis Tritt last year. The cost is also average for what the festival has spent the last four years on headliners, Sale said.
Those in charge of the festival are holding a retreat this weekend. The group will work on the details of the festival, including other events, ticket prices, vendors and advertisement. Sale said they can’t advertise for the Festival until they get the OK from Black’s agent. However, vendor applications will go out by the end of the month.
Sale said the group is looking to mix things up a little more during the day of the festival and through they are not sure what, are looking into different kind of daytime entertainment and music.
Black, whose debut was in 1989, has written, recorded and released more than 100 songs, according to his official Web site. He has had nearly two dozen No. 1 hit singles.
He’s not only a guitarist, but is also proficient on drums, harmonica, bass guitar and a number of other percussion instruments. He also co-founded his own label.
